NIAC is setting up a database of effective catechetical practices. NEW! Transforming Adolescent Catechesis

As a result of the National Symposium on Adolescent Catechesis, the work of the Initiative groups, and findings of recent research, NIAC is will be launching Transforming Adolescent Catechesis—A process for parishes and schools to examine, evaluate, and rethink how they approach and do adolescent catechesis in their communities and to develop a comprehensive, intentional plan that reflects the gifts and needs of their community. Survey by Episcopal Region of the Grades Confirmation is Celebrated

Preliminary reports on the average age of confirmation in Roman Catholic dioceses nationally are available. These reports were the result of a voluntary survey sent to diocesan Directors of Religious Education and Directors of Youth Ministry. Primarily only one person from each diocese responded, however occasionally both directors responded. The reports are divided by episcopal region and include a national report. Outcomes and Indicators

Last year we completed what was a critical component of NIAC—a clear set of outcomes for adolescent catechesis. In the past several months, we have taken these outcomes further by identifying concrete indicators of these outcomes in young people. It is our belief that this tool will assist parishes, schools, dioceses, and families as they develop evaluate and structure their approaches to catechizing young people. Schools of Discipleship?

What do you think about “Schools of Discipleship?”

The Advocacy Task Group of the National Initiative on Adolescent Catechesis is having a conversation about possible new images for integrating comprehensive youth ministry with its component of catechesis. One possible image is developing a “School of Discipleship” in each parish. We realize that the image of ‘school’ can have negative connotations if equated with classrooms solely. However, we believe the image of school understood holistically might enable us to think differently and more intentionally about comprehensive adolescent catechesis.

NIAC Vision and Outcomes

As the Initiative moves forward a guiding vision and a clear understanding of the goals of adolescent catechesis needed to be articulated. This vision and outcomes built from on the catechetical heritage of the Church through documents such as the National and General Directory for Catechesis, Renewing the Vision, and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Symposium White Papers

Seven initiative areas (advocacy, cultural considerations, formation and training, models and methodology, parent engagement, research, and resources) resulted from the National Symposium on Adolescent Catechesis. For several months, groups have met and produced white papers of recommendations for next steps regarding the National Initiative on Adolescent Catechesis. These white papers are available under the initiative area tabs.
